We want to say a huge thank you to all of you for supporting your students and our classrooms. It is always a whirlwind at the beginning of the year and it has been wonderful to feel your support and generosity. The best thing for our 2nd graders is to come to school feeling prepared and confident for the day. That means coming to school with a charged ipad, their Take Home Folders, lunch, snack, water bottle and a positive attitude. Any and all help to create this opportunity for your students to have a great start to their day is appreciated.
Our Parent Information Night will be this coming Thursday from 6:00 - 6:45pm. Mrs. Blackwell, Mrs. Cohen and Mrs. Sifford will all be together in the Gym. We understand that sometimes it is unavoidable, however, it would be best if this event is parents only. We look forward to sharing what we will be doing this year and answering any of your questions.
Students will begin our beginning of the year assessments in iready this week. More information will come out following the assessments, but please help us by having your child bring their charged ipad this week. If your child has a pair of headphones that they can keep in their backpack to use at school that would be very helpful. Be sure to label them. We find that Five Below typically has a good selection. Our classrooms only have a limited amount for students to borrow. Thank you!
Second graders are hungry! Please pack a NUT FREE snack for your child every day in their backpacks. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide snacks for the class.
A green note when home with your children in their Take Home Folders this week. This is simply to let you know that we understand that the mornings can sometimes be a challenge for students. Sometimes they are anxious or sad about something at home. Sometimes their allergies are giving them trouble. Sometimes they simply are exhausted and need a little extra love and hugs from us. We get it and want to best support your child. If you find that your child is having one of these mornings, please just send us an email and all that you need to say is "Handle with care". We will get the message and be sure to give your child extra support and understanding that day.
This week and next week, we are getting to go to our first Meet the Counselor with Mrs. Canafax. She has been such an incredible addition to Glenhope and is excited to start Guidance and Mindfulness times with our classes. Our students will see her twice every month as a class. New students will get to eat lunch with her soon so that she can get to know your new Gator.
Students also got to go to the library and check out books with Mrs. Jaffray this week. Many students will just leave their library books at school in their book bins, however several asked to bring them home. We ask that these book "live" in their backpacks after they read them at home so that they can also read them in class. We will not be sending home book bags, but students will have several books provided from us in their book boxes throughout the year to help them practice their fluency on their specific level. For now, we allow students to choose any book they wish from the library for the simple fun and enjoyment of reading. We will get more into how to pick the best book for us in the next couple of months.
Language Arts: I can recognize the central idea by using supporting evidence. I can discuss the author's purpose for writing a text. I can identify that a complete sentence has a subject and a predicate. I can brainstorm ideas for writing a personal narrative.
Math: I can add and subtract within 20 with automaticity. I can represent numbers in different forms including standard, expanded, base ten and word form. *Please be supporting your student's fluency by using flash cards and practicing their addition and subtraction facts at home.
Social Studies: I can recognize that I am a member of a family, classroom and school community. Students will focus on how to be a responsible community member and citizen through our Studies Weekly Curriculum.
Science: I can observe and record data like a scientist.
Our planning time is from 2:15 - 3:00pm each day.
