To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, the first graders will be participating in a grade level story and craft program on Friday, October 25th from 12:00-1:00 pm. The students will be able to weave their own miniature tapestry after listening to the story. We would appreciate having 4 volunteers per class to help assist the kids with this activity. Please email your child's teacher if you would like to volunteer! It will be first come first serve based on when we receive emails. Thank you so much!Ā
This year 5th graders are volunteering their time for community service. This information and link is for a time to play board games with 5th graders from Glenhope. One of them has a first grade sibling, so they want to share their excitement about playing games with first grade Gators. It sounds like a fun opportunity for the kids to enjoy some time together outside of school.
This is Matthew's Zevakhin mom. Matthew likes board games and participates in community hours project. He did in the past an event for local library where kids played board games, so we planned the same here. I asked 5th graders if they have kids who'd like to join and we found another Matthew from Ms. Hayes's classroom. They met, played games and decided what they offer for the first graders.
I shared this invitation to the FB group for the first graders, but I wanted to share with you if you know kids. This is a google sign up for the free board games event for just Glenhope First graders where both Matthews will play with first graders. We hope to get 4-6 kids, we don't even need more or will do another event for everyone who signs up.
I decided to share this link with you as we plan it for Oct, 13 and in case you know kids who are interested and would like to join:
This week in math we began our unit on problem solving with addition/subtraction and data analysis. We worked with word problems and missing addends. Next week we will begin 3 weeks of T-charts, tallies, data collection and constructing graphs as well as answering and/or compiling questions about sets of data.Ā
In reading, we learned about animals and did animal research. We will be reading a variety of genres, such as realistic fiction, folktales and informational texts about animals.Ā
In social studies, we will study about the characteristics of good citizenship and the role of citizens in a constitutional republic, including the importance of voting. Students will be introduced to the idea of patriotism and how we demonstrate our patriotism through national symbols, holidays, and events.
Next Friday, October 18, is Lunch With A Loved One for 1st ,4th and 5th grades. Our lunch time is 11:00 AM if you are able to join your child for lunch. There will be other opportunities if you are unable to make it next week.Ā
Information came home this week about the annual Fall Fest. We hope to see you there. It's always a great day to support our wonderful PTA and enjoy some fun with friends outside of school.Ā
In the coming weeks, we will be doing some fun projects that are always a hit in first grade. Look for more information soon.Ā
Language Arts: I can spell words using sound-spelling patterns. I can read high frequency words. I can build my reading stamina. I can write narrative stories about my own life. Ā I can create mental images to deepen understanding. I can make connections to what I am reading based on personal experiences.
Math: I can represent addition or subtraction word problems up to 20 by using appropriate strategies such as concrete objects, pictorial models, and number sentences. I can create a T-chart using a set of data.
Science: animals have different external structures, such as birds, mammals, and fish, that help them meet their basic needs for survival. Animals grow and change. Many young animals resemble their parents. Life cycles show how animals go through a pattern where they are born or hatched, grow, and become adults.
Social Studies: I can describe what a good citizen does and how they exemplify good citizenship.Ā
