This week in math, we continued working on place value. Next week we will have out 2nd Nine Weeks TEKS CHECK to assess those skills. During this unit, we have worked on building numbers with models, objects and tens and ones. We will practice skip counting, counting forwards and backwards, comparing numbers using <,>,= and building sets that represent numbers larger or smaller than a given number. We are also learning how to represent numbers in standard form, picture form, word form and expanded form.
In reading and language arts, we are working on retelling/sequencing and making connections to stories and characters. Students enjoy making personal connections to what they are reading. Different ways we make those connections are personal experiences or other books/stories that remind us of something we've read. It is an important tool for comprehension and comparison. We are continuing to work on writing during our literacy time as well as through journal writing and the practice of spelling high frequency words. We continue to focus on proper usage of capitalization, punctuation, spelling and adding meaningful details.
Next week we will not be changing classes for reading groups. This will give us a chance to work one on one with students to assess skills learned in small groups and make any adjustments to reading groups for January's return to learning. This includes reading and spelling high frequency words, Students will be reading a "cold" read, which is a text they have not seen before. This helps us assess progress made from the homework books that students bring home daily and word work skills taught to this point.
We will have another grade level mixer. We will be studying holidays around the world, and Mrs. Griffard has planned another Connect to Texas activity for our grade level. In addition, we will all rotate through classes for various holiday stories and activities. We enjoy getting the whole grade level together for activities, and we appreciate Mrs. Griffard's work to include everyone in these enrichment activities.

HOUR OF CODE
This week students downloaded (or updated) several coding apps for Hour of Code. They enjoyed practicing some of the things they have learned in Makerspace and were excited to learn new things. Below are the apps added to iPads from Meraki. As always, we ask that students not add apps outside of school so we can keep battery life and data storage at positive levels for classroom usage and learning.
