WHAT A BUSY WEEK!
Students have been hard at work tapping out words that have a short vowel /e/ in the middle. We have been practicing reading and writing these "cvc" words (words that have a consonant at the beginning and end and a short vowel in the middle.) In math, we have returned to number sense - identifying and building sets of 0 - 20 objects, identifying the number that is one more and/or one less than a given number, counting backwards from 20 to 1 and counting from 1 – 100 by ones and by tens. In social studies, we learned that people have basic wants and needs and how they work jobs to meet their needs and wants. We also discussed the difference between wants and needs, which is a very difficult concept for five and six year olds; they want everything!
READING CLASSES
We just wanted to give you a head's up that some students switched to a new classroom for reading. Most students are working hard and completing their work, however, some students need much encouragement to get their work done. If your child is coming home with incomplete work, please talk to them to find out why they are unable to complete it during literacy time and let us know if there is anything we can do to help.
COOPERATION
The character trait for the month of December is cooperation. In guidance, students will learn that cooperation means "working together to reach shared goals." Cooperation is a skill that must be learned. Here are some things you can do with your child to help him/her learn the skill of cooperation:
Take turns
Explain the rules
Problem solve
Give choices
Give ideas, not commands
Give positive reinforcement
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
Your child brought home a note with a paper to fill out and return on Monday, December 12th. We would like to have all students participate and share their family traditions. Thank you!

HOLIDAY PARTY
We hope you can join us for our holiday party on Thursday, December 19th from 1:30 - 2:30. Our room moms have been hard at work planning some fun activities. Please remember that siblings - older or younger are not allowed to attend.
POLAR EXPRESS
Tuesday, December 17th, the imaginary train will leave “Glenhope Station” for our pretend trip to the North Pole. Students will enjoy drinking hot cocoa with marshmallows and watching the Polar Express movie. Please send your child to school in his/her pajamas to fully enjoy this experience. No slippers please, since we will be going outside for recess.
BOOK BAGS
All students need to keep their reading bags (and library books) in their backpacks when they are not reading them.
There are some students who are not reading their books at home and are having difficulty keeping up in class. Please help your child become a confident and fluent reader by having him/her read everyday. It is so very important.
THE SECOND i-READY DIAGNOSTIC will be given next week...
The second i-Ready diagnostic will be given to students in grades K-8 during the first two weeks of December. i-Ready is an online diagnostic that helps your child’s teacher determine their strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year. Results from the diagnostic allows us to meet your child where they are and provides us with data to inform instruction in reading and mathematics.
Here are a few things you can do to help support your student:
Make sure they get a good night’s rest before taking the online assessment.
Talk to your student about why the assessment is important. You can say things like:
The test will help you find out what you know, what you are ready to learn, and it will help you get “just the right” lessons.
Try your best, and do not rush, but don’t spend too much time on a question that you do not know how to answer.
Remember, questions on the test change based on your answers to earlier questions. You will see some questions you don’t know. That is okay! Just try your best.
Let them know you’re excited to hear about how it goes and to ask them about their experience.
