Dear Parents,
Have a wonderful break with family and friends! We look forward to seeing your kids back at school on Wednesday, January 8th! Thank you again for all your support in 2024! Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
Sincerely,
Ms. Bell & Ms. Herrera
Language Arts: Goal Setting and Author Study
I can reflect on my writing and set goals for the new year.
I can gather information about an author by examining her books and making predictions and inferences about how her life story influences her writing.
Math: Financial Literacy
I can determine the value of a collection of coins up to one dollar and use the cent symbol, dollar sign, and the decimal point to name the value of a collection of coins.
I can learn skills to manage finances effectively, including calculating how money can be saved and spent, distinguishing between a deposit and withdrawal, identifying examples of responsible borrowing, evaluate lending decisions, and differentiate between producers and consumers.
I can calculate the cost to produce an item to sell in the classroom market and use my financial literacy knowledge to make a profit.
Science: Weather in the Sky
I can measure, record, and graph weather information.
I can investigate different types of severe weather events and explain why some events are more likely in certain regions.
I can describe the sun as a star that provides light and heat and explain that the moon reflects the sun's light.
I can observe objects in the sky using tools to compare how objects in the sky are more visible and can appear different with a tool than with the unaided eye.
Social Studies: Government
I can identify the functions of government.
I can compare the roles of public officials.
Have you checked out the GC-SAGE website in a while? It has great resources for parents as well as dates of upcoming events. Check out the site below:
All elementary, middle, and high school students are invited to submit original artwork for the cover of GCISD’s official holiday greeting card. This year’s theme is "Show Others Kindness." Three student designs—one each from the elementary, middle, and high school levels—will be selected and sent out on behalf of the GCISD Board of Trustees and Superintendent Dr. Brad Schnautz. Cards are sent to community leaders, area businesses, organizations, and other school districts. For more information, click the link below:
Classroom teachers are limited in what snacks they can provide here at school to students. Due to the various allergies on campus, teachers can have Veggie Straws or Skinny Pop (both regular flavor) as classroom snacks.
Most students bring their own snacks daily, but occasionally some forget, which is why we have some on hand. As you can imagine, we can tend to run out of snacks if we have a week where lots of kiddos have forgotten to bring a snack. We would appreciate anyone who is able to send in snack-sized bags of Veggie Straws (sea salt) or Skinny Pop. Thank you!
We have the most INCREDIBLE PTA here at Glenhope. Please check out their website to learn more!
From our principal, Dr. Griffin:
Our community has always supported our school in so many ways, for which we are very grateful. One of the traditions that has long been in place is our annual Greenback giving campaign, which we use to supplement the budget provided by the district.
Many years ago, Glenhope parents stated their preference for an opportunity to donate rather than having students participate in fundraisers. That has continued to be our practice, and we have been able to supplement classroom and building requests through our community’s generosity. There is now an option for you to donate by using a credit card through the district’s RevTrack system.
Gifts made to Glenhope should be tax deductible (per IRS tax code section 170), but you will want to confirm with your tax advisor. We will furnish a form acknowledging your contribution. Some corporations match donations, so I would encourage you to investigate that possibility as well. We received an estimated additional $4,000 - 5,000 last year from matching corporate donations.
As a reminder, we have two snack times during the day. Please be sure to send nut-free (NO PEANUTS OR TREE NUTS) snacks.
Thank you for keeping everyone safe!
Please make sure your child comes to school prepared each day with a charged ipad. Please write names on lunch boxes, water bottles, ipad chargers, and head phones.
Please make sure you complete the District Background Check every year. Forms must be completed and approved before you will be allowed to volunteer at the school or on field trips.
We'll keep this section in here for a while as we find it to be an important one!
We would like to provide additional support at school if your family is experiencing difficulties at home.
If your child is coming to school after a difficult night, morning or weekend please email me with the words "Handle with Care." Nothing else will be said or asked. This will let me know that your child may need extra time, patience, or support during the day.
Most Fridays we will go to the school library in the morning. 2nd graders can check out two books at a time, and should bring books back to check out new ones on Fridays as they finish books.
Thanks for your help in making sure books come back each Friday. Better yet, make a habit of storing the library books in your child's backpack so they are always there!
