Your kiddos are settling into life as 5th-graders. These first few weeks are about routines and expectations, the foundation of a solid final year of elementary school. The growth process has begun, and we cannot wait to see how they will grow. Those initial nerves are giving way to the comfort that comes with the structure of our schedule. As with any growth, there will be some pains, but we will grow together and learn from those moments. Every year's start brings some hiccups, and our conversations about them have focused on learning and growing. However, there is no shortage of grace given during these first weeks of school. We have discussed learning as a process and how mistakes prove we are learning.
We have been working on our Beginning-of-the-Year i-Ready assessments in Math and Reading and continuing to learn how to navigate Canvas. Every week brings opportunities for celebrations and new learning, and we look forward to lifting your kiddos and working to foster a more profound love of learning. We are grateful for the time we get to spend with them each day, and with your help, we will make this year wonderful for them.
Your kiddos make our neck of the swamp brighter!

Camp El Tesoro field trip forms due
If you were unable to attend the Camp El Tesoro Informational Meeting, we have put all of the information we shared below, which includes a slideshow and a packet. The actual packet was sent home with your child today (Friday) if you didn't attend last night. At the back of the packet are important health forms and permission slips that must be filled out. Let us know if you have any questions!
We have to send our menu requests to Camp El Tesoro the week after next. They will need a count of how many people have various dietary restrictions. Please fill out the form below by next Friday, September 6th.
**If you have applied to be a chaperone, please go ahead and fill the form out as well so that we can send over your dietary restrictions in the event you are chosen to be a chaperone**
Camp El Tesoro Dietary Restrictions Form
If you are interested in being a chaperone for our Camp El Tesoro trip on October 22 - 24, please fill out the application linked below. Please be sure to read all of the chaperone information/expectations at the top of the form before deciding to fill it out.
At this time, we are not asking potential male chaperones to fill out an application. Instead, male chaperones will need to fill out this form. If we see that more male chaperones have expressed interest than we have space for, we will then reach out and ask them to fill out an application. Responses are due by Friday, August 30th.
Chaperone applications are due on Friday, September 6th.
Camp El Tesoro Chaperone Application
Thank you to those of you who are volunteering your time to help us out!
At the end of next week, we will have to provide Camp El Tesoro our final count of students attending our trip. Please have field trip forms (3 total) filled out, signed, and returned no later than Friday, September 6th.
Field trip forms can be located by clicking the link below and going to pages 15-17.

We understand that students sometimes have appointments during the school day. We've had a few parents ask what is the best time based on our schedule, so we thought we would share with you all:
10:45 - 1:00 would be perfect for students to be pulled for appointments. We are doing targeted small group lessons, specials, recess, and lunch during this time.
From 7:45 - 10:45 each morning and 1:00 - dismissal, students will miss class time if they are pulled (which we know is sometimes unavoidable)
Being a room parent is one of the many great ways to support your child's teacher and class! This year, we plan to have one room parent per class.
What does being a room parent mean?
Attend Room Parent Volunteer Meeting on September 6th
Help coordinate grade-level Fall Festival auction baskets
Send out communication to parents in the class about upcoming events
Solicit parent volunteers for class parties (Winter and Valentine's)
Attend class parties to oversee party setup, running of party activities/games, and party clean up
Teacher birthdays- communicate the teacher's birthday to the class and coordinate volunteers to bring in coffee and lunch to the teacher that day
Recognize your teacher during Staff Appreciation Week in May
Assist the teacher with other activities related to the class (for example, preparing STAAR snacks, decorating for open house, etc.)
If you are interested in being a room parent, please complete this Google Form:
If you have any questions, email Jenina Roberts at roomparents@glenhopepta.org
From our principal, Dr. Griffin:
Our community has always supported our school in so many ways, for which we are very grateful. One of the traditions that has long been in place is our annual Greenback giving campaign, which we use to supplement the budget provided by the district.
Many years ago, Glenhope parents stated their preference for an opportunity to donate rather than having students participate in fundraisers. That has continued to be our practice, and we have been able to supplement classroom and building requests through our community’s generosity. There is now an option for you to donate by using a credit card through the district’s RevTrack system.
Gifts made to Glenhope should be tax deductible (per IRS tax code section 170), but you will want to confirm with your tax advisor. We will furnish a form acknowledging your contribution. Some corporations match donations, so I would encourage you to investigate that possibility as well. We received an estimated additional $4,000 - 5,000 last year from matching corporate donations.
Language Arts:
I can explain an author's purpose and message within various texts.
I can analyze how an author's use of language, voice, and mood makes their writing more interesting.
I can analyze literary elements and explain their contribution to the stories we read.
I can identify compound sentences in the texts I read and use them correctly in my writing.
I can compose an expository essay (informational text) that conveys information about a topic using a clear central idea, genre characteristics, and craft.
Math:
I can use expanded notation to represent the value of a digit in a decimal.
I can round decimals.
Science:
I can compare and contrast matter using magnetism.
Social Studies:
I can describe ways humans have impacted the environment.
I can identify resources produced in the 13 Colonies.
I can identify different types of regions.
I can describe the physical characteristics, climate, and human characteristics of the United States.
I understand the positive and negative effects of human-environment interaction.
Students have been working in Canvas and seem to be improving in their navigation skills and in terms of checking and submitting assignments.
We suggest you do the pairing feature in Canvas, which allows you to "observe" your child's classes to see their daily lessons and assignments and allows you to see what they have or have not turned in. We have placed a link below that will show you how to become an "observer" in your child's Canvas account.
We know we aren't perfect. Please click the link below and give us feedback on the first two weeks of school. We'd love to improve, and we'd appreciate your feedback. Thanks in advance!
This year, we will be working with students on a growth mindset vs. a fixed mindset. We will encourage students to become more growth-minded. Please watch the video below to understand more about a growth mindset and a fixed mindset.
We also recommend Mindset, a wonderful book by Carol Dweck. It is an easy read and describes the growth mindset vs. fixed mindset understandably.
This year, the district is celebrating our students and staff every #WeAreGCISD Wednesday! Through posts, they will showcase how the district is working ‘Together for Tomorrow.’ Be sure to check in each week to learn more about what #WeAreGCISD means to our students and employees.
