Topic B:

During the time of the Mycenaeans and Minoans, Greek Civilization was considered inferior compared to the Bronze Age empires of the Fertile Crescent, but during the Iron Age the Greeks and later the Romans so dominated the Mediterranean region, Europe, and Africa that the focus of world power and economy shifted west. During the Greco-Persian Wars, the city of Athens held off the mighty Persian Empire, and in the third century BC Alexander the Great conquered the entire Fertile Crescent. By AD 300, the Romans had assimilated Alexander's empire and added the continent of Europe, making them the world's most powerful empire at the time. Using knowledge you have gained from the lessons in this unit, write an essay of 600 or more words that identifies the economic, cultural, and political developments that helped Greece and Rome achieve mastery of the Mediterranean World.
