The Politics of Slavery, 1787-1860

I will be hosting a live class at 1:00 pm MT on Thursday, 9-17 on the following topic: The politics of slavery. Antebellum America, 1787-1860: The Antebellum (Post Revolutionary War up to Civil War) Era was a time of great prosperity and growth for America. The United States grew from 13 to 33 states, canals were dug connecting the Great Lakes to the Hudson River and Atlantic Ocean, toll roads and railroads linked cities throughout the nation, and the Mississippi became a great highway carrying goods from the East and Midwest down to the South and back. While our nation was prosperous and growing, however, a great division existed among the regions over the issue of slavery, and as the years went by many conflicts resulted from this division, ultimately leading to the Civil War. This class will focus on several of these conflicts, demonstrating how the politics of slavery caused our nation to split apart and fight against itself in a war that produced more casualties than all our other wars combined. Project Credit: Attendance in this live class will fulfill the requirements of your live class assignment for this unit.
