The European Renaissance, 1300-1600

Hi All,

I will be hosting a class at 10:00 am MT on Tuesday, 1-31 on the topic of the European Renaissance. Europe, the 14th century: Feudalism is dying as the aristocracy throughout much or Europe are rapidly selling land to peasants in order to invest in the joint stock companies establishing trade monopolies in every corner of the globe. European towns and cities, never part of the feudal system, are now thriving and the entire continent is linked in trade and the spread of ideas. Massive cathedrals exist at the heart of each city towering hundreds of feet higher than anything the Romans had ever produced, and universities teem with students. By the 14th century, a powerful, prosperous, and learned Europe realizes with some shock that they have not only equaled the power and knowledge of Greco-Roman civilization, but have in many ways surpassed it. Intellectuals begin to argue that the reason and knowledge of Classical Civilization should no longer be hid away in monasteries but be released to the public, and an outburst of art and literature ensues that transforms medieval Europe, laying the foundation for the modern world.
