Vietnam, a Televised History Episode 7: Vietnamizing the War, 1969-1973
Vietnam, 1969-1973After President Johnson's announcement in 1968 that he would not seek re-election, American politicians now realized that the conflict in Vietnam had become a highly unpopular war among American voters. Presidential candidate Richard Nixon ran on a campaign platform of "Peace with honor" and once he was elected began a process of gradual US withdrawal in the Vietnam Conflict and replacement with South Vietnamese troops, a process he termed "Vietnamization". By 1972 Nixon had withdrawn 300,000 American troops from Vietnam, leaving the South Vietnamese government in a precarious position. Episode 7 of Vietnam, a Television History tells the story of the gradual "Vietnamization" of the fighting in Vietnam.
