In order to get credit for this project you must watch the following film and submit the completed movie worksheet:
Martin Luther Part 1
Wittenberg Germany, 1517. After an agonizing 12 year spiritual journey that went from dedicating his life to God, to losing his faith in the church he served, to a revelation that ultimately salvation was freely granted by God alone, Martin Luther nailed 95 complaints about the Catholic Church's sale of indulgences to the door of the cathedral in Wittenburg Germany. Luther's 95 theses would be reprinted and read throughout Europe, and would eventually split the Catholic church, ushering in an era of intense religious conflict. The Protestant Reformation, began by Luther, can be seen as an example of the Renaissance idea of humanism spreading into Northern Europe: in this new era, Luther would call upon all believers to behave and have the Biblical knowledge of priests, accepting authority only from God, not the Pope. In typical Renaissance style, Luther didn't feel he was destroying Christianity, but perfecting it by freeing individual Christians to perfect their faith. This film will give you a good idea of the spiritual struggle Luther went through to arrive at his "Salvation through faith alone" theory, and the movie ends with the Pope calling for Luther's execution.
