Frontline: The Warning

Have you ever wondered how our economy melted down in 2008 and how the Great Recession began? The Warning is an episode of the PBS series Frontline that documents the story of Brooksley Born, the head of an obscure financial regulatory agency in charge of regulating Over-the-Counter Derivatives, complex financial transactions that would ultimately become "toxic assets" and bring down our economy. In 1998, Ms. Born asserted that the Derivative market needed regulation and predicted that if the government failed to act, it could destroy our economy. She was not listened to because the market was working so well at the time, and ten years later her worst predictions were fulfilled to the letter. But not before her reputation and career were destroyed first by the men who were supposed to be protecting our nation's finances. This documentary is both fascinating and heartbreaking, and does an excellent job demonstrating when the market works and when it doesn't.
