Unit 2 Readings

For this unit, you have several readings describing America's transition from isolationism and neutrality in the 1930's to becoming the "Arsenal of Democracy" in the 1940's. Each of these primary sources are speeches or fireside chats made by Franklin Roosevelt as he gradually transitioned our nation from isolation to intervention, and they often coincide with major events in the lead up to to WWII. Although not required, I strongly recommend watching The Century Part 5, Over the Edge (45:00) before doing the readings. To finish this assignment, download the attachment below and answer the questions.

Unit 2 Readings:

Franklin D. Roosevelt, "Quarantine" Speech, 1937

FDR Fireside Chat, "On the War in Europe", 1939

FDR Fireside Chat, "On National Defense", 1940

Franklin D. Roosevelt, "The Arsenal of Democracy", 1940

America's experience in WWI soured Americans on the democratic ideals and interventionist policies of Woodrow Wilson, and the Great Depression gave us enough domestic problems to keep us occupied without worrying about the rest of the world. During the 1930's, however, the world became increasingly unstable and hostile: In 1931, Japan invaded China, in 1935 Italy conquered Ethiopia, and between 1936 and 1940, Nazi Germany subdued much of continental Europe. Several prominent Republican congressmen like Gerald Nye and William Borah championed "Isolationism" and neutrality, and many Americans endorsed these policies. Although Roosevelt favored early intervention, it took many years and several jarring events to change American opinion to support the war effort during WWII.
