China from the Inside: Power and the People
China from the Inside is a 4 part documentary produced by PBS and the BBC that describes the society and government of modern China. China is a unique nation politically and economically because since the 1970's the Chinese Communist government has intentionally moved away from Socialism as an economic system and increasingly embraced free market capitalism, yet not free democratic processes that often go hand-in-hand with capitalism. The merge of a one-party authoritarian system with free market capitalism has resulted in some unique challenges for the Chinese Communist Party, as episode 1 of this series, Power and the People documents. I include this film inside this unit of government because the subject of this unit is international governments, and the Chinese system is so different than our own that it merits a closer look.
