Vietnam, a Television History Episode 2: America's Mandarin

Vietnam Conflict, 1954-1963

Ever wonder why South Vietnam couldn't seem to get it together even with US support? Episode 2 of Vietnam, a Television History documents the story of the deeply troubled Diem regime in South Vietnam from 1954-1963. When the Geneva Accord of 1954 partitioned Vietnam and called for a vote for reunification in 1956, France withdrew from Vietnam and America began to support the newly created nation of South Vietnam and the man who had been appointed as its president, Ngo Dinh Diem. Over the next nine years, despite a generous flow of American cash, the Diem regime in South Vietnam became increasingly troubled, which in turn increased alarm over the Vietnamese situation in the US.
