The purpose of this series is to explain basic ideas in economics by describing the historical roots of the modern economy. Episode 3 of this series, titled "Risky Business" explores the idea of how our human desire to minimize risk in an uncertain world has transformed the world of finance. Risky Business documents the story of insurance and its influence on economics: how our desire to minimize risk manifested itself first as private insurance companies, later the welfare state of the 20th century, and in the 21st century hedge funds and derivative markets.
