Reconstruction, 1865-1874

Hi All,

I will be hosting a live class at 10:00 am MT on Tue, 3-6 on the topic of Reconstruction. Northern Victory over the South in the Civil War insured that Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation would be enforced, and the passage of the 13th and 14th Amendments theoretically gave Blacks the same rights as Whites throughout the nation, including the South. Once the war ended, the federal government faced the dual problems of rebuilding the Southern States' infrastructure and economy and enforcing the Civil Rights the war imposed on a bitter and defeated population. In order to do this, the government created the Reconstruction Bureau, and maintained a pretty heavy troop presence in the region as the bureau tried to create a "New South." This era, lasting from 1865-1874, is called the "Reconstruction Era" and I will be going over its main components and key events in this class.  Project Credit: Attendance in this live class will fulfill the requirements of your live class assignment for this unit. To get into this class please click the following link: Trehal's Office/Live Classroom. This is an interesting chapter in our national history and an understanding of this era leads to better understanding and appreciation of the Civil Rights movement. See you in class!

If you were unable to attend the live version of this class you may still get credit by watching the recording and answering the following question: What did W.E.B. Dubois feel Blacks during this era should focus on to gain equality? In order to get credit for the recording, please submit your answer to this question and the date that you watched the recording in your Unit Live Class Assignment. You may watch the recording by clicking on the following link: View the Blackboard Collaborate recording
