AP US History A

Course Overview:

The purpose of this course is to use the study of American History in order to understand the story of our nation and our people. By looking at the historical events themselves, primary sources written during the era, and historical interpretation and analysis, students will experience a thorough and in-depth treatment of the historical material. The ultimate goal of this course is to prepare students for the AP exam, but in doing so students will be exposed to a rigorous academic regimen, develop strong study and writing skills, and most importantly to intellectual material that demonstrates there is so much more to the study of history than memorization of names, dates, and places.

AP US History A spans the Pre-Colonial Era through the conclusion of WWI. The course is divided into units that cover periods of time, and each unit is given a broad theme or objective; a smaller sub-story within the greater story of history. In addition to the era-inspired objectives, several themes are emphasized in the course: the emergence and nature of the American culture; the practice of religion and quest for social justice; the growth and nature of the American economy; the relationship between local and national government in our nation; America’s relationship to other nations and its global role politically, culturally, and economically.
