The Ascent of Money Episode 2: The Bonds of War

World Finance 2.0: Rise of the Bond MarketThe Ascent of Money is a series of documentaries produced by the BBC and PBS based on the Harvard Economist Niall Fergusson's book The Ascent of Money, a Financial History of the World. The purpose of this series is to explain basic ideas in economics by describing the historical roots of the modern economy. Episode 2 of this series, titled The Bonds of War tells the story of the connection between the bond market and the nation state. While the Italian City States used bonds to fund their wars in the 16th century and the Dutch created the stock market, it was large and powerful nation states like England, France, and America that would take the bond market to a new level and use it to finance their wars and expansion. Nathan Rothschild, one of the most powerful bond traders in the world during the 19th century was said to have the power to permit or prevent wars, proving that money was indeed on the rise.
