1864, Part 1: The Valley of the Shadow of Death is Episode 6 of Ken Burns' widely acclaimed 9-part series on the Civil War. The series first premiered on PBS in 1990 and 40 million viewers tuned in the week it played, making it the most successful and popular documentaries every produced at the time. This episode describes the first half of the year 1864, a time when the pace and tempo of battle was near constant. 1864 was past the turning point for the South, but the Confederacy was not yet near defeat. This film documents the Wilderness Campaign and the struggles of a Union that is growing weary of war.
