American Experience: The Great Famine

Did you know that an American Relief program in the early 1920's saved tens of millions of people in Russia from starving to death? The American Experience documentary The Great Famine describes the American Relief Agency, a program created by Herbert Hoover in 1921 to assist Russia with what was then called "The Great Famine", the greatest natural disaster to hit Europe since the Black Plague. Before the famine was over, 5 million Russians had starved to death, yet because of the Americans, millions more were saved. In the 1920's, America was now a bona-fide world power, yet programs like the ARA suggested that the US would be a great power of a different sort.
