US History Reconstruction to Present B

Course Overview:

This course is the second year of a two-year study of United States (U.S.) history. U.S. History Reconstruction to Present is an in-depth exploration of the American experience during the twentieth century. First semester begins with a review of the Civil War and covers the Reconstruction, Industrialization, and the Gilded Age, followed by a survey of U.S. history from 1900 to 1939. Second semester opens with a study of the Second World War and concludes with an analysis of contemporary issues and events. State standards for this course include content knowledge and skills in the following areas: critical thinking, the evolution of democracy, exploration and expansion, migration and immigration, responses to industrialization and technological innovation, international relations and conflicts, and cultural and social development.

US History Reconstruction to Present B tells the story of America from 1945 to the present. With the end of WWII America entered the atomic age and a period of great prosperity. The "Baby Boom" generation moved to pleasant homes in the suburbs, worked their way up the career ladder, and they and their children enjoyed a higher standard of living than anyone else on earth or in history. The rapid growth did not come without a price, and during the 66 years since WWII the US has dealt with its share of domestic and foreign problems. At the dawn of the 21st century, America is reminded of the ancient adage that the only thing harder than getting to the top is staying on top.
