Unit Essay: The Containment Policy

The Containment Policy
From 1945-1990, the US was engaged in an ideological conflict with the USSR, the only other nation to emerge from WWII as a superpower. This conflict was deemed the Cold War, as each nation squared off and opposed the other economically and politically, but seldom militarily. The official policy of the US towards communism throughout the Cold War was summed up in a policy called The Containment Policy. The idea of this policy was to prevent communism from spreading, and the US did this in a variety of ways on a variety of fronts. Breaking this period into three different eras, 1945-1960, 1961-1975, and 1976-1990, write an essay of 600 words or more that analyzes America's success in containing Communism and dealing with the threat of the Soviet Union during the Cold War.Â
