Roman Civilization from 500 BC to AD 500

I will be hosting a live class at 10:00 am MT on Thursday, 4-19 on the topic of Roman Civilization. While Alexander the Great briefly united the Mediterranean world in the 4th century BC, upon his death his empire split into pieces and disintegrated into war. Although Greek culture and achievement were spread throughout the region, destiny had not chosen the Greeks to unite this world and lay the foundation for Western Civilization, but instead chose an obscure Latin city on the banks of the Tiber river for this role: Rome. While the Greeks prided themselves on cultural achievements, the Romans considered government to be their genius, and from 500 BC to AD 200, the Romans expanded from their central Italian location to conquer all the Mediterranean region and most of Europe, eventually coming to govern 1/4 of the world's population. In this class, we will go over Roman history and some of the lasting Roman contributions to our civilization, such as our language and government.
