The Century Part 9, Happy Days (1953-1960)

20th Century America, 1953-1960:

The Century, America's Time is a series done by ABC in the 1990's that tells the story of the twentieth century, a century dominated by technology, destruction, and a time when America became the world's greatest economic and political power. Episode 9 covers the years 1953-1960: The post-war baby boom, suburban living, Marilyn Monroe, and Elvis epitomizes the contentment of the Eisenhower years. But these were also years marked by rabid McCarthyism, violent civil rights demonstrations, and a frightening escalation in the Cold War. This program probes the tension between these crosscurrents in American History. “Happy Days (1953-1960)” examines the myth of “the good old days” of 1950s suburbia. Included: Sen. Joseph McCarthy's “witch hunts”; the widespread fear of a nuclear apocalypse; protests associated with desegregation; and the violence associated with the civil-rights movement.  Project Credit: In order to get credit for watching this film, download the movie worksheet attached here, fill out the questions as you watch the film, and submit the completed movie worksheet.
