Europe, 1808-1815:After repeatedly devastating the armies of Austria, Russia, and Prussia and establishing a vast empire stretching over the continent of Europe, in 1808 Napoleon begins to make mistakes that will ultimately undo him: In 1808 he invades Spain and gets bogged down in a long, brutal, guerrilla war with the Spanish, and in 1812 after Russia defects from Napoleon's Continental System, he invades Russia with a doomed army of 600,000 men. Napoleon Bonaparte is perhaps the best symbol of the important new political and spiritual forces that eventually transformed nearly every government in Europe during the 19th century.
