Vietnam Era History

Course Overview:

Vietnam Era History tells the story of America's 10 year conflict in the  Southeast Asian nation of Vietnam; a conflict that produced 58,000 casualties and sparked massive protest, dividing the nation.   The course begins with Vietnam's long colonial history, explains how this nation became caught up in the Cold War between America and the Soviet Union, and ends with the pull out of American troops and North Vietnamese victory. Students taking this course will define unit-specific key terms and explain their significance, analyze primary sources and watch historical documentaries, and will write essays designed to flesh out the broad historical themes of each unit. By doing these activities, students will be exposed to a rigorous academic regimen, develop strong study and writing skills, and most importantly to intellectual material that demonstrates there is so much more to the study of history than memorization of names, dates, and places.
