Early Middle Ages: The Age of Faith

I will host a live class at 1:00 pm MT on Thu, 5-10 on the topic of the Early Middle Ages. Europe, West Asia, North Africa 500-1000: Rome has collapsed and its collapse causes political, economic, and social chaos on such a high level that later historians will call the era the "Dark Ages." With the central political and cultural authority of Rome gone, a power vacuum is created that will be filled by many tiny kingdoms at first, then later massive empires of faith so filled with religious fervor that their entire society revolves around religion. This is the story of the Early Middle Ages, a time when a new order diametrically opposed to the Greco-Roman ideal would rise from the ashes of the Roman Empire, destined to make its mark on the world. In this class we'll look at the rise of the Islamic Empires and Feudal Christendom in Europe.  Project Credit: Attendance in this live class will fulfill the requirements of your live class assignment for this unit.
