AP US History B Unit 4 Essay: 2011 FRQ #5

2011 FRQ #5: African American leaders have responded to racial discrimination in the United States in a variety of ways. Compare and contrast the goals and strategies of African American leaders in the 1890s –1920s with the goals and strategies of African American leaders in the 1950s –1960s.

I will hold a live class at 1 pm MT on Tue, 5-4 in order to go over writing the Unit 4 Essay, the 2011 FRQ #5. We will go over the essay topic, brainstorm a fact list, and I promise that those who attend will walk away with a solid plan of attack for their essay. It would be helpful if you could come to this class prepared with knowledge so we can set up a good essay. To prepare yourselves, I would like you to look over the Barron's/Sparknotes Materials concerning Civil Rights:

1890's-1920's:

Barron's Chapter 21: The Progressive Movement, 1900-1920

Sparknotes, The Progressive Era

The Roaring Twenties

1950's-1960's:

Barron's Chapter 28: American Society in the Post-World War II Era, 1945-1960

Sparknotes, The 1950's: The Cold War, Civil Rights, and Social Trends

Barron's Chapter 29: The High Tide of American Liberalism, 1960-1968

Sparknotes, 1960's

You DO NOT need to read the Barron's and Sparknotes chapters in their entirety...I would like you to skim for important information. This will be an essay about the goals and strategies of African American leaders in their struggle against discrimination in each of these eras, and you will be prepared if you can produce 2-5 key terms per era.

See you on Monday.
