The Rise of Totalitarianism
I will be hosting a live class at 10:00 am MT on Wed, 4-4 on the topic of Totalitarianism. The first world war that consumed Europe from 1914-1918 was a total war, and its participants committed the entire resources of their societies in its execution, giving unprecedented control to government in the first part of the twentieth century. When the war was over, the devastation it had wrought was so complete that several European empires were unmade and nearly every society in Europe saw massive upheaval. These two elements led to the rise of a new type of government first in Russia and later in Italy and Germany that would unify its people and take total control of every resource in society to support its own agenda: totalitarian government. This menacing new form of government had a Darwinian concept of the world and would eventually ignite a second war even more destructive than WWI. We will go over major events in Europe from 1918-1939 and discuss the common elements of Stalin's Soviet Union, Mussolini's Italy, and Hitler's Germany. Project Credit: Attendance in this live class will fulfill the requirements of your live class assignment for this unit.
