Best and Worst: Met Gala 2022

The Met Gala, usually referred to as “fashion’s biggest night out,” was held on May 2nd at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan.

The purpose of the event is to raise funds for the museum’s Costume Institute. Occurring once a year, a new theme is always introduced at each event. The red carpet theme of this year honors American historical fashion, specifically the Gilded Age.”

The Gilded Age is a time period considered to be held from the 1870s to the early 1900s. Coined by Mark Twain, the term “Gilded Age” for a time period that was "golden" on the surface, but corrupt underneath, or in historical terms, an explosive economic and industrial growth, followed by great political corruption.

Fashion during this time period is widely renowned to be grand and over the top, which is an ultimate reflection of the influx of clothing materials such as silk, tulle, and lace.

Iconic elements of fashion during this era also included the bustle, corsets, long-boned bodices, décolleté-cuts, dress suits, black frock coats, and top hats. Color schemes during this era had extravagant autumn tones and a dark romance palette.
