Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and recently declared “Richest Man in the World,” bought Twitter this week for 44 billion dollars. The purchase has spurred a lot of controversy, as intense changes will likely be made to the app, including its regulations.
Musk described the regulations that Twitter has in place as “censorship that goes far beyond the law.” In a statement, Musk said, "Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated."
Musk has not overtly aligned himself with the far left or right. His goal is to make Twitter as politically neutral as possible in order to be a trustworthy source for its users. Only time will tell if he means what he says.
The elimination of bots is another key goal that Musk vows to accomplish. For years, Twitter users have been affected by spam bots, which are automated accounts that can do the same things as real human beings: send out tweets, follow other users, and like and retweet postings by others. However, spam bots use these actions to engage in deceptive, harmful and annoying activity. Musk, himself, has been hacked in the past by a Cryptocurrency bot.
Twitter would be decidedly safer without the bots.
