The Marauders listen to a team speech by Captain Ella MacDougall before the puck drop.
The DHS girls varsity hockey team celebrated their six seniors on February 1st , which included a ceremony to honor their time and dedication to the team over the past five years.
Before the game (which the Marauders lost to Westwood High 3-2), the team decorated the rink in celebration of their three fantastic seniors. Both the Westwood and Dedham teams lined-up on the goal lines cheering for their seniors, who were formally announced and congratulated with flowers. When the game ended, the team presented the honorees with gifts and took pictures of them with family, friends, and fellow teammates.
Connie Doyle (Captain):
Doyle has been part of the DHSGVH team for the past five years as a forward. She is always willing to help make a play and carry the puck if the opportunity arises. Doyle is a fantastic player and teammate. Whether it's from helping understand a drill, or making sure the team is taken care of, she is always there to help. When asked Doyle how she felt about the Senior Night game, she said, “It was an upsetting loss, but I extremely appreciative of how the team decorated and made my night special."
Ella MacDougall (Captain):
MacDougall has been part of the team as a defenseman for the past five years. She is a crucial part of the defense from power plays to penalty kills and is always willing to put herself in front of the puck to block the shot, as well as rush the puck up and down the ice for a scoring opportunity. When we asked about the Senior Night game, she said, "It was hard fought, but the team couldn't get the win.”
Gianna Murphy:
Murphy has been part of the Marauder team for the past five years as a forward. She is always willing to get a penalty to stick up for her teammates. She does whatever it takes to get the puck and get in the shooting lane for a breakaway. When we asked about the Senior Night game, she said, “I thought it was a great night with an unfortunate ending. The team played hard, but in the end, it wasn't enough to pull out a win.”
Emily O'Neill:
O'Neill has been on the team for five years as a forward. She is a great player on and off the ice and is always willing to go the extra mile during games and practices. When asked how she felt about Senior Night, she said, “It felt nice to see all the effort the entire team and their families put into the night. It was a lot of fun, but it would have been better with a win!”
Theresa Stronach:
Stronach has been with the Marauder team for five years and is a great player on and off the ice. She is always gives it her all and is completely dedicated to the team. As a forward, she fights hard to get the puck and skate for a breakaway shot. When asked how she felt about the Senior Night game, she said, “It was a hard fight, but in the end it didn't go the way we wanted it to.”
Ally LaBrecque:
LaBrecque Is one of the team's most celebrated players and the most outgoing teammate anyone could ask for. She loves to make sure her teammates are well taken care of and to make sure that her teammates are having a good time on the bus practices and games. When we asked about the Senior Night game, she said, “It was a great had fought game but didn't go our way in the end.”
Opening the game for Dedham was Murphy, junior Ava Iantosca, freshman Adia Murphy, and seniors LaBrecque and MacDougall on defense. Westwood scored two goals during the first period, leaving Dedham down 2-0 at the end of the first period.
Shortly after the start of the second period, Iantosca put one in the net followed by a tying goal from MacDougall. Unfortunately, Westwood got the best of the Marauders in overtime.
