Junior Theresa Stronach and senior Katie Soucie celebrate senior night.
The DHS girls varsity hockey team celebrated their three seniors throughout "Senior Night" on Wednesday, including a ceremony to honor their time and dedication to the team over the past five years.
Prior to the game in which the Marauders defeated Medfield (4-2), the girls team decorated the rink in celebration of their three amazing seniors. Both teams lined up on the goal lines cheering for their seniors, who were called up to be recognized and congratulated with flowers. After the game, the Dedham team rallied behind their seniors and gave them gifts and took pictures with the team, family and friends.
Taylor Peckham, one of the team’s captains, has been with DHSGVH since her 8th grade year. Through that time, she has proven herself to be one of Dedham's most determined defenders. Ever since she was a child, Peckham has been playing hockey. She puts in a lot of effort and time and continues to carry the team to victories with her positive attitude and commitment to the team. When asked about the game, Peckham said, “I’m very happy that we won, especially on my senior night. I am also very happy for Ava Iantosca for keeping us in the game and winning it with her 3 goals. Now it’s onto Norwood!”
Captain Katie Soucie is the starting goalie for DHSGVH. She started playing hockey her freshman year when she noticed the team was in need of a goalie. Soucie trained for a year with her coaches and then jumped into the starting spot for goalie once the previous goalie graduated. She constantly backs the team with outstanding saves and plays in the net. Scoucoe has proven her dedication and commitment to the team throughout the years and now she leads the team with her positive energy and kindness.
Nieve Chaplin, assistant captain of DHSGVH, has played defense for the team since her 8th grade year. Ever since she was little, Chaplin has been playing hockey. Throughout the years, she has developed many skills that she takes to the ice everytime she plays. Chaplin continues to bring enthusiasm, determination as well as her good taste in music to the team and has been a leader for many underclassmen.
Opening the game for Dedham was junior Gianna Murphy, sophomore Abbey Keyes, and freshman Tess Parke. Peckham and Chaplin were on defense and Soucie in net. During the first period, Medfield scored two goals, one at the beginning and one at the end. Keyes got a two-minute penalty by the end of the period for “roughing.” Dedham was down 2-0 by the end of the first period.
Dedham was hungry to score as the second period began. Right off the bat, freshman Mary Stronach put one in the net with an assist from sophomore Ava Iantosca and the help of junior Connie Doyle. Halfway through the second period, Iantosca stuffed in a rebound off of Stronach's shot.
At the end of the second period, Iantosca scored another goal assisted by junior Ella MacDougall. This left Dedham with a 3-2 lead going into the third period.
Both teams fought back and forth throughout the 3rd period until Dedham got possession of the puck near the end of the game, leading to Iantosca scoring another goal for Dedham and earning herself a hat trick.
It was an overall successful night for the Marauder girls. They left the rink with their heads held high.
