Catherine Sargent is a captain of the DHS girls winter track team. Prior to running track, she played varsity soccer for her freshman and sophomore year. In the spring of her sophomore year, she made the decision to run track. She was immediately loved by all the coaches, as she was a natural.
Last season, Sargent competed in shot put and discus. While she continued with shot put this winter, she was not able to compete in discus, as the event is only held in the springtime. To fill her time, Coach Barbuto, the head coach, recommended that she try 55m dash hurdles. Competing in these two events, Sargent has scored a tremendous amount of points for the team. She has now qualified for the state meet while also she throws an impressive 32’ in women’s shot put.
For the first time ever, girls winter track had all junior captains. Sargent is primarily responsible for leading warm up, communicating with coaches, keeping everyone organized, and most importantly, encouraging her teammates.
Sargent’s favorite moment of the season was when she got her three-steps for hurdles, which is, as it sounds, taking three-steps in between each hurdle. For reference, in general, runners take four or five steps in between each hurdle.
