Virtual ABBA members performing at the purpose-built ABBA Arena in London.

ABBA Voyage is an immersive experience that combines new cutting-edge technology, spectacular lighting, and iconic ABBA songs. This concert is one like no other because Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, the members of ABBA, have created digital versions of themselves to play in London.

The last time the members of ABBA physically played in London was in 1982, but this new technology allows them to “perform” multiple times a week and look much younger in age! Being a huge ABBA and “Mamma Mia,” fan I was very excited when I got to go to London and see them play. I will admit, I was a little skeptical, but ABBA did not disappoint. The show was outstanding.

The band rose from the stage to the song “The Visitors,” as colorful lights darted across the arena. The digital versions of ABBA looked so realistic, I had a hard time believing it truly wasn’t them  dancing across the stage and belting out the songs. Following this epic entrance, Benny came out onto the stage and introduced himself and thanked everyone for coming as if he was actually there. He also talked about this amazing musical experience they were able to create, explaining how the grand opening got delayed to 2022 due to COVID-19. They then went on to sing some of their hit songs like “Lay All Your Love On Me,” “Mamma Mia” and “Waterloo,” which filled the whole arena with energy and excitement.  Throughout the show, the audience danced and sang along, with most people dressed in sequins and disco outfits which added to the lively atmosphere.

This concert had the perfect combination of slow and more heartfelt songs and positive and upbeat songs. “Fernando” was a tear jerker, as Anni-Frid dedicated the song to her grandmother who had been her biggest supporter, but unfortunately passed away. Alternatively, “Dancing Queen” was the most fun and cheerful song, filled with lots of dancing and singing from the audience. Multi-colored lights appeared on the ceiling as ABBA sang this famous and timeless song. Another song that I really enjoyed was “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme.” This song was very popular among the audience and the combination of flashing lights and the blaring music gave it a true disco feel.

During the song “Does Your Mother Know” the members of ABBA introduced the physical band members who were performing with them on stage and the arena filled with applause. As the 90 minute show started to come to an end, ABBA ended with their hit song “The Winner Takes It All.” This is one of my all-time favorite ABBA songs and I loved it when Meryl Streep sang it in the movie “Mamma Mia.” Seeing it live in person was a fitting way to end an outstanding night.

If you are ever in London and looking for an unforgettable experience, ABBA Voyage is the right place for you. It is great for all ages with timeless songs and a positive atmosphere. I have been to many different concerts, but this was definitely one of my favorites! I hope everyone is able to experience this amazing production at least once in their lifetime.
