Sudiksha Konanki went missing on March 6th.
What was supposed to be a fun spring break trip to the Dominican Republic has turned into a nightmare for the family and friends of 20-year-old Sudiksha Konanki. The University of Pittsburgh student vanished on March 6th, while vacationing in Punta Cana, leaving loved ones desperate for answers.
Sudiksha, who lives in Virginia, was last seen at the RIU Republica Resort, where she was staying with friends. Surveillance footage shows her at a bar with a group that included 22-year-old Joshua Riibe, a senior at St.Cloud State University in Minnesota. The footage also captures her appearing unwell before she and Riibe left together.
Riibe told authorities they went swimming despite red-flag warnings about dangerous surf conditions. According to him, a strong wave pulled them into deeper water, but he managed to get Sudiksha back to shore. He claims he then lost consciousness, and when he woke up, she was gone.
Since then, an extensive search has been underway. Authorities have used helicopters, drones, boats, and scuba divers to scour the area, but there’s still no sign of Sudiksha. Investigators found her clothes on a lounge chair near the beach, but no evidence of foul play---at least not yet. While officials haven’t ruled out accidental drowning, they’re keeping all possibilities open.
Riibe, who remains a person of interest, has been questioned multiple times and is currently stuck in the Dominican Republic under police watch. His passport has been confiscated, and his attorneys are now fighting to get him released, arguing that he’s being detained without due process. A hearing is scheduled for March 18 to determine his status.
After extensive search efforts yielded no results, her parents have formally requested that authorities declare their daughter legally deceased, believing she drowned in the ocean’s strong currents. Her disappearance has gained international attention, with many calling for a thorough investigation. Unfortunately, until more information comes to light, all they can do is wait and hope she’s found safe.
