Max Gorman, class of 2021.

Max Gorman as Pugsley in the Addams Family musical.

Next up to be featured in this series is Max Gorman. During his time at DHS, Max has dipped his toes in many of the arts programs. He has been a member of the Performing Arts Company (PAC), Jazz Band, Marching Band, and Winter Percussion. Max is leaving DHS a kinder place, as many underclassmen have followed his example through the years.

As a member of PAC, Max accomplished many things. Formerly the assistant light director, he is currently an officer. Many Addams Family viewers can attest the outstanding performance Max gave as Pugsley Addams this past winter. Max described the PAC as a second home: “You spend so much time around these people that it's hard not to bond with them.” His dedication and joy for the program leaves everyone hopeful and passionate about its future.

As Max's time with PAC strengthened his abilities as a performer, his experience with different music ensembles have made him a stronger player: “The ensembles have allowed me to practice and play music in both different styles and a different capacity than the regular concert band. I've been able to become more comfortable in myself and my abilities, not to mention I've learned quite a lot in my time in these programs.”

When asked to comment on his favorite class, he replied, “Band, hands down. Music is very important to me and to be able to spend three or four classes during the week playing and learning and enjoying music is amazing.”

With his love for band, comes Max’s appreciation for Mr. Wurman: “You can tell from the minute class starts that he cares so much about music and helping his students reach out of their comfort zones and expand their musical abilities. Not one day did I walk out of a band having not learned something about music, no matter how small.”

As far as the future is concerned, Max is plans on attending college in the fall. He's received many offers. The most compelling of those are from Bennington College and St. John's College. His goals of majoring in English are not surprising, as his academic record is exceptional.

Looking back on his time at DHS, all of Max’s fondest memories are of the times he spent with friends. He also mentioned many cherished memories of DHS teachers and staff.

Max would like to the leave the following parting words to the underclassmen of DHS: “High school isn't the end of your life, but take some time to try to make some memories. Don't worry about pushing yourself to your limits to please other people. In addition, don't leave your college essay until the last minute; applications are long enough as they are, you don't need to be trying to work on that essay, too.”
