Sara Sountoulidis
Mirror: What is your position? What classes do you teach?
Sountoulidis: I am a paraprofessional. I have a different class each block. This year, I have two Chemistry classes, Forensic Science, Algebra 3, Vocational Math, English and History. I love being a Para because I am able to work with so many teachers and students.
M: How long have you been teaching?
S: This will be my 6th year as a para. I was at DHS for five years, then I took two years off to work at our family restaurant and spend more time with my children.
M: Where are you from?
S: I was born in New Hampshire and lived in New Boston, a small town near Manchester, until the 5th grade. My family moved to Middleborough Massachusetts when I was in 6th grade. I met my husband in college and we now live in Dedham with our three boys.
M: Where did you go to college?
S: I attended Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill. At the time it was a small women's college. Pine Manor is now integrated with Boston College. The Pine Manor Campus is now considered the Brookline Campus of Boston College.
M: What do you like most about teaching?
S: The most rewarding part of my job is knowing that I have made a difference. I have all of the thank you cards and notes that I have received from students. It is so nice to know that I can help a student feel more confident if they are struggling with a specific class. Even if I am just able to help turn a bad day into a good day, I'm happy.
M: What are your pet peeves in the classroom?
S: Side conversations during instruction! Cell phones and air pods were my number one pet peeves in 2022. I have to commend the students, teachers and administration for nearly eliminating this distraction. I am especially proud of our students. I have trouble putting my phone away and I know it is very difficult for students. There has been no push back when teachers tell students to put their phones away. The result has been more classroom engagement. It is a noticeable change that is very positive!
M: Did you have any jobs before teaching?
S: I was a Nanny in Medfield for eight years. I loved being a Nanny and I still stay in touch with the family. I was home with my boys for 14 years and helped at our restaurant as well. When my youngest went to first grade, I came to DHS.
M: What do you like most about Dedham?
S: I love this community. Owning a business in Dedham Square was a wonderful experience. I was able to meet so many people. Customers became our extended family. It's also nice to run into students outside of school. When I left DHS some of my students would stop by the restaurant to visit, it always made my day!
M: What inspired you to become a teacher?
S: I've always loved working with children. When I was home from college, I was a lifeguard and swim instructor. I loved nannying, I would take my kiddos to classes, practice and help them with homework. As a para, I'm able to work with students in the classroom and still be available for my own children.
M: What are your hobbies?
S: I love to run, hike and spend time with my family and friends.
M: What is your favorite movie?
S: The Age of Adaline. Reality Bites, A Star is Born, and Pump up the Volume are all close seconds.
M: What are some of your favorite books?
S: All of them! A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf. Anything written by Jack Kerouac. I love stream of consciousness writing. I have to admit that I have read everything Liane Moriarty has written. Her books are a fun escape.
