The 2023 Dedham Girls Hockey Team.
Last week, the Boston Herald published an article predicticting the outcomes of the MIAA Division Girls Hockey Tournament games. These predictions included Braintree (#21) winning over Dedham (#12).
Not so fast, Herald.
The Marauder team ended up squashing this prediction, winning 3-2 in overtime.
From the perspective of the two athletes writing this piece, predictions like the ones that ran in the Herald set a team up for failure. A major newspaper publishing predictions of failure make for a problematic playing environment. It changes the game for us; it causes us to be more tense in our execution and defeatist in our attitude.
It was also hurtful. We were ranked higher than Braintree, after all.
Hockey is more than stats and opinions. It's about grit and determination. The Boston Herald underestimated the Dedham Marauders. Maybe they'll think twice next time around.
