Nikki Glaser hosted the 82nd Annual Golden Globes.
The Golden Globes aired their 82nd annual awards show on January 5th, honoring the best in the film and television industry.
Nikki Glaser, American comedian and actress, hosted this year's ceremony as the first solo female host in Golden Globes history, and she was extremely successful. After last year's host Jo Koy’s highly offensive monologues left guests and social media shocked, all eyes were on Glaser to succeed. Overall, she knocked it out of the park.
While several hit films and shows were up for nomination, a few select pieces stood out amongst the rest. “Emilia Pérez,” for instance, had a triumphant night, winning Best Supporting Actress, Best Picture (Non-English), Best Picture (Drama/Comedy) and Best Original Song (Motion Picture). This was a major win for both Karla Sofía Gascón - the film's transgender star - and the transgender community as a whole. When celebrating her victory, Gascón said, “You can maybe put us in jail. You can beat us up. But you never can take away our soul or existence or identity.”
Another award that was a long time coming was Demi Moore winning Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical/Comedy), for The Substance. In her acceptance speech, she said, “I’ve been doing this for 45 years and this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor.”
Unlike last year's awards, where movies such as Oppenheimer and Barbie overshadowed other films nominated, this year most movies nominated stood a chance to bring home the award. Films including “Emilia Peréz”, “Conclave”, and “The Brutalist” ended the night with at least one award. However, the film “Anora”, although having five nominations entering the night, came home empty-handed. And surprisingly, fan-favorite “Wicked” won only one award, the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, even though the film was nominated for four awards.
The night wrapped up with awards such as Best Original Score: Challengers, Best Picture (Animated): Flow, and Best Original Song (Motion Picture): El Mal (Emilia Peréz).
