Mirror Review: One Day

Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod star in One Day.

One Day is a Netflix show based on David Nicholl’s popular and heart throbbing novel of the same name. Many fans of the novel were fearful when the show was announced because the 2011 film version starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess was so poorly received. Despite this, the series has become a hit and proved many critics wrong, ranking in the Top 10 most-watched shows on Netflix for the last two weeks.

The main characters, Emma Morley (nicknamed Em and played by Ambika Mod), and Dexter Mayhew nicknamed Dex (played by Leo Woodall), meet on the night of their university graduation and begin their relationship with a failed “one night stand.” Instead of a brief exchange, they have deep conversations about their goals and the future. The story then follows the duo through almost 20 years of friendship, grief, love, and missed communication. They move in and out of each other’s lives over the years and check in on their lives every passing year on July 15th, the same day they met in 1988.

This show was perfectly cast and all of the actors do an outstanding job. Their realistic emotion brought tears to this writer's eyes and gave me a  newly found perspective to appreciate the small joyous moments that life is made up of. Each one holds its own significance.

One Day conveys the message to not spend time sitting around and waiting on something or someone-  if you want it, get it. Everyday is an opportunity for growth, connection, and self-discovery. The eye watering show made me really think about these things and shared them through a beautiful heart throbbing story.

The show captivates attention by watching the back and forth between the two over the years. The missed chances and communications errors have many viewers frustrated yet hopeful the pair will end up together. Most of the bad timing was caused by never communicating their feelings until it was too late. Many fans were left in tears during the last two episodes as it presents what life really is with all the wonders and worries.

It shows the characters journey through joy, heartbreak, and everything in between. It's a mix of sweet moments and real-life heartache that gets eyes watering and emotions flying.
