DHS seniors began their final year of high school by watching a sunrise together. The event was coordinated by the class of 2023 and its president, Lugh Cunningham. After various days of online discussion, the class decided to gather on the first day of school at Millenium Park in West Roxbury.
The meeting was part one of a two part event. The senior class will again gather in May to watch the sunset on their last day of school.
Despite a few last minute changes, the event went very well, with the majority of the grade showing up.
In anticipation of the sunrise, seniors reconnected with one another which was, as Justin Reilly pointed out, “the first time the class had gathered together as the graduating seniors.”
“It was cool to meet up with friends I hadn’t seen over the summer," said senior Chris McDougall ”
Seniors blasted music, danced, and painted their cars during the event. They also decorated their car windows using colorful markers. This resulted in doodled pictures and phrases, such as “Seniors 2023.” Some seniors went all out and decorated not only their windows but their entire car.
“The event went really well overall… decorating our cars was a fun activity to do together as we watched the sun rise,” noted Lily Hyde.
With the sun rising at 6:16 AM, the event required an early start.
”Even though I was hesitant to wake up earlier than I needed to, going to the senior sunrise was truly worth it,” said Mia Krikorian.
Millennium Park offered an unbeaten view of the sunrise, which was colorful and spectacular to see. For all watching, it also held an emotional impact. “[Watching the sunrise] it really hit me that this is my last first day of school,” said Brendan Greeley.
Following the sunrise, some seniors hung around for another half hour, and then met up for breakfast, while others instead went straight to school.
The sunrise event brought back a tradition that had to be put on hold due to Covid. Said Lugh, “Seniors haven't been able to experience all of the things that come with celebrating the last year of school for some time now."
