The DHS boys hockey team made it to the top of the world - the TD Garden - last Sunday to compete for the Division 4 State Championship title. The event came at the end of a historic run, boasting a regular season record of 11-8 and claiming the 6th seed.
Fueling off these remarkable achievements, the boys had a lot of momentum and energy heading into the MIAA Tournament, and it showed on the ice.
The first round saw the boys face off with Rockland on Dedham’s home ice. They breezed through the game with their high intensity and dominance on all sides of the ice, giving them a 4-0 win.
Next up was Pentucket, where the Marauders racked up another (8-3) win.
The Elite 8 game was a fan favorite that kept everyone on their toes and emotions high. The game (versus Dover/Sherborn/Weston) remained neck and neck right up until the final minute.
With just 40 seconds left, senior Ryan Laughter tipped in a shot from senior Nick Moreno at a point to give the Marauders the much-needed lead. Senior Tim Holton finished off the game with an empty-net goal to secure the nail-biter win for Dedham.
The Final Four game followed.
The boys played a challenging first period against Hudson, but it didn’t take long for Dedham to dominate and take over in the second period, scoring five goals. Senior Noel Adams had a tremendous game, with 26 saves and another shutout sending his team straight to the TD Garden.
For the first time in DHS History, our boys' hockey team made it to the final round of the MIAA tournament. Boston’s TD Garden was filled bright and early at 9 AM with members of the Dedham community. Teachers, parents, friends, students, you name it - Dedham had just about everyone there, making for an exciting atmosphere at an intense game.
Gia Farrell, a DHS senior in attendance, said, “It was a really cool environment, and so fun to see our school play at the Garden!”
Dedham went up against 5th seed Winthrop. The Marauders held their own throughout, making smart places, good passes, and an overall great team effort.
The student sections from both schools chanted back and forth, giving the game an intense and competitive atmosphere.
Unfortunately, after a Dedham goal was called back after review, Winthrop took the 1-0 lead and eventually won with a score of 3-0 over the Marauders.
“It was a fun experience," said Senior Captain Brian Dunne. I’m proud of the team and how far we've come. I couldn’t have asked [to play hockey among] a better group of guys”.
Despite the heartbreaking loss, the team made DHS history. Their efforts and incredible athleticism did not go unnoticed in our town. It will be exciting to see what they will bring us next year!
