Mirror: What classes do you teach?
Ethan Dolleman: This year, I am teaching two sections of US History 2.
M: How long have you been teaching?
D: This will be my 23rd year in education. I taught for the first 11 years and was a building administrator for the past 11 years.
M: Where have you taught before?
D: I taught for a year in Maine at Leavitt Area High School; a year in Sudbury, MA at Curtis Middle School; and for nine years at Westwood High School. I was also the assistant principal at Wayland High School for five years and the principal at Norton High School for six years.
M: Where did you go to college?
D: I went to Bates College, where I got a degree in history with a minor in education. I got a master’s in education from Boston College and a doctorate in education from Northeastern University.
M:. What do you like most about teaching?
D: I am passionate about history as a subject matter and trying to impart some of that enthusiasm, knowledge, and skills onto students.
M: Where are you from?
D: I am originally from a small town in southern Maine called Limerick. However, I have been in Massachusetts for over 20 years and in Dedham for the past 10.
M: What are your hobbies?
D: I have four kids, so very little time for hobbies at the moment. I am not sure if I would call them hobbies, but I am an avid fantasy baseball and football participant.
M: What are your pet peeves in the classroom?
D: I am not at all a fan of students lining up at the door at the end of class.
M: What do you like about Dedham?
D: Dedham is a wonderful community. As I said above, I have lived here for ten years and really appreciated all of the people I have met. I think the best thing about it is that it has a small-town feel in a pretty large community. Of course, the Flag Day Parade is awesome and a good example of that.
M: What inspired you to become a teacher?
D: I had great teachers growing up who really motivated me and made me want to become a teacher.
M: What is your favorite movie?
D: I have a few, but I think The Last of the Mohicans is probably at the top of the list.
M: What is your favorite book?
D: Has to be The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien.
M: What sets you apart from other teachers?
D: I don’t think there is much that sets me apart. As an administrator, I have gotten in the habit of wearing a tie every day.
M: Will you be involved in any extra-curricular activities?
D: I hope to be more involved in clubs and activities as time goes on. Currently, I am helping out with coaching the football team when I can.
M: Favorite apps on your phone?
D: The apps that get the most attention on my phone are Kindle, Audible, and the Apple Podcast app.
M: Favorite food/favorite restaurant?
D: I love a buffalo chicken pizza.
M: Favorite sports team?
D: I am still a Patriots fan despite their recent ineptitude.
