Since 1955, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation has been awarding the National Merit Scholarship to academically talented students across the United States. This year, Lucy Auger, a senior at DHS, was chosen as an honoree.

“I feel proud, and I am also a bit shocked, ” said Auger

In order to be nominated, Auger needed to obtain a certain score on PSATs. She was notified in September that she made it to the semifinal stage and then got through to the finalist stage based on her high SATs scores and GPA.

This is a prestigious honor, indeed, as becoming a finalist happens to less than one percent of high school seniors.

As a finalist, Auger needed to submit a recommendation letter and an essay. Ms. Andrew, her guidance counselor, wrote her recommendation.

“My essay was about being a twin, but more specifically, my identity and navigating social spheres,” Auger stated.

The National Merit Award qualifies students for numerous scholarships to different schools and companies.

“It feels good to know that my hard work has paid off,” she said.

Auger will attend Smith College in the fall.
