Jeff Baena, a screenwriter and director, died from an apparent suicide at his home in Los Angeles on January 3rd. He was 47 years old.
Baena was celebrated for his work on films such as ‘The Little Hours’ and ‘Horse Girl’, as well as for co-writing ‘I Heart Huckabees’ with David O. Russell. Throughout his career, he collaborated closely with his wife, renowned actress Aubrey Plaza, on projects including the comedy series ‘Cinema Toast’ and the film ‘Spin Me Round.'
The couple, who met in 2011 and married in 2021, shared a unique partnership in life and art.
Baena’s life and career were marked by creativity and innovation, but he also faced significant personal challenges. He struggled with manic depression, a condition that is believed to have contributed to his death.
In a statement, Plaza described the loss of her husband as “an unimaginable tragedy” and expressed gratitude for the support received while requesting privacy during this difficult time.
Baena’s death has highlighted the critical need for awareness and support surrounding mental health challenges.
His talent will be remembered by many his many fans, and his contributions to cinema will continue to inspire and influence others for many years to come.
