The Super Mario Bros. Movie has grossed over $906 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2023 and setting box-office records for the biggest worldwide opening weekend for an animated film and the highest-grossing film based on a video game.

If you had a video game addiction like me when you were younger, then you probably fell into the category of people who were excited by the release of the new Super Mario Bros. movie.  The movie is directly targeted towards kids and fans of Nintendo and the Mario franchise. As a young adult, I can confirm that this movie was still very enjoyable to watch even though I’m no longer eight years-old sitting on my couch playing Mario Kart on a random Thursday.

The movie starts off with its brilliant animation done by Illumination Studios.  Some moments actually felt like a video game was being displayed on the screen.  What made the movie authentic, however, was the decision to keep it simple. The story shouldn’t be very complex and difficult to understand, because neither is the video game, which was very simple, original, and, at the same time, extremely entertaining.

The only negative thing I can say about the film is the pace is a little too fast. It's only 92 minutes-long, yet there's a ton of detail and story crammed in. Nevertheless, I was left longing for more. I am hopeful that there will be a sequel given that a major easter egg was shown after the end credits.

Ultimately, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is everything I could’ve hoped for. I would definitely recommend it if you were a Nintendo fan growing up, or simply want to watch an enjoyable family movie. The phrase that comes instantly to mind is "nostalgic perfection."
