DHS held its annual Academic Awards for Underclassmen ceremony on Tuesday night, honoring students with prestigious book awards, as well as awards of recognition to students in ninth, tenth and eleventh grade.
Assistant Principal Mr. Cavanaugh announced the book awards, including those from Bowdoin College, Wellesley College, Harvard University, Salem State University, Suffolk University, and Brown University. Not only do the recipients receive a slick, antique-looking novel, but they also have their application fees waived if they apply to that school. The list of recipients reads: Leen Nestant, Joshua Bernadin, Timothy Vaughan, Joseph Dooley, Siobhan Fitzpatrick, Filitsa Siokas, Dean Boecher, Danielle Guilfoyle, Megan Bondar, Victoria Horard, Cookie Duncan, Kristina Shkurti, Victoria Gonzalez, Amanda Noonan, Samuel Demarrais, Hanna Littmarck, and Emily MacKinnon.
Academic Excellence was a common theme in the descriptions of these awards, but they also highlighted community service, interest in the education field, membership in school organization, high PSAT or SAT scores, exceptional character and personal connections, and interest in the study of history.
Some students were also recognized for non-book awards, including the Society of Women Engineers Award, Richard Cawley Award, University of Rochester, Bausch, and Lomb Memorial Award, Rensselaer Award, and the Math League Award.
The ceremony proceeded to recognize 76 students who were nominated by their teachers for their “hard work, positive attitudes, and overall success at Dedham High.” Awards were given from the departments of Fine Arts, English, Mathematics, World Language, Wellness/Physical Education, Industrial Technology, Instructional Technology, Science, Social Studies, and Guidance. Every teacher chose a single person they had as a student, out of all of their specific subjects and levels (AP, Honors, CPI, and CPII). Examples from each department are Manuela Haylock, Alyssa MacDougall, Cecilia DiFlaminies, Kathy Milfort, Sharae Hill, Connor Stamm, Edward Carroll, Linnea Hanney, Georgyina Beltre, and J’Nye Sibley.
The evening was concluded with cake, cookies, and coffee in the cafeteria to celebrate these outstanding students with a promising future for their exceptional academics, character, attitude, work ethic, and success at DHS.
