After a three year wait for a new album, the widely renowned artist Tyler, the Creator, finally released Chromokopia, his ninth studio album, on October 28, 2024. With his last album Call Me If You Get Lost released in 2021, and winning Best Rap Album at the 2022 Grammy Awards, this album has been highly anticipated. The album includes many features from notable artists including Daniel Caesar, LaToiya Williams, Doechii, Teezo Touchdown, Lil Wayne, Glorilla, Sexxy Red, and Lola Young.
Chromokopia touches on Tyler the Creator's adolescence. We see this in the song “St. Chroma,” that attributes the artist's success to his mothers support and guidance through his fame. Throughout Tyler’s youth and adulthood, his father was absent. In the song “Like Him (feat. Lola Young),” he explains the grief, love and loss of sharing an identity with his father in the way he looks, as well as acts, despite not knowing him. The theme of hardship continues throughout the album in songs; “I Killed you,” referencing the death of his self esteem, as well as “Paranoid”, which talks of his hardships coming into fame, and the feeling of always being watched. Although the album talked about his hardships and the struggles he’s faced, towards the end of the tracklist there are songs like “Thought I Was Dead,” proving to all that he is not out of the rap game and he is going to continue to dominate the music scene. The last song on the track, “I Hope You Find Your Way Home,” circles back to his last album title, Call Me if You Get Lost, revealing that he has finally found himself, and wishes for others to find themselves as well.
Overall, we give this album 5 stars. We don't listen to Tyler The Creator avidly, but this was an insanely good album, with its touching lyrics, crafted instrumentals, and diverse features. This album touched on numerous important topics, and it can be hard to properly convey those themes in an album. Every aspect of the album has to be executed perfectly, and Tyler, The Creator fully exceeded this expectation.
